In Florida, there's a growing chain of arcades called Arcade Monsters, which was about an hour from where I went to college. It basically merges bar/night life with arcades. You pay a flat entry fee, all arcade machines are free (no quarters) and there's a bar that serves drinks. One recently opened up in Orlando on International Drive and it has a pretty nice setup. I definitely recommend checking it out one day for anyone local or taking a vacation to Florida.

This is a video gaming subject that I didn't realize I really wanted so bad. I mean learning about controller Origins and why the buttons except the way they are and how everything is like it is is something that is extremely interesting. You see I think the NES could be the most important video game console ever made because it saved the video game industry but I wouldn't consider it Nintendo's most impactful console because of the fact that the SNES has a controller that's been copied for decades.

I was around back when arcades were still popular over here. So many memories of them. I remember seeing one guy do the MvC2 cable tiger knee air hyper viper beam, wondering how he did that, and simply tapping on his shoulder and asking him how after the match ended, and he just showed me how on the spot. Another was someone using wolfgang krauser in real bout fatal fury 2 and asking him how he did the deadly rave super that ended in a cyclone. It wasn't just fighting games, a lot of co-op side scrolling beat em ups (final fight clones essentially) were hugely popular. Arcades over here gradually got replaced by PCs as counter strike and rts (later mobas) got more and more popular - not to mention setting up a string of PCs was cheaper than arcade cabinets for the arcade ownders - and they essentially became PC cafes over time, but even those eventually died out as home PCs and internet got cheaper. Also..... speaking of evo moment 37, justin got parried by daigo - again - ending with the same super n SF6 a few months ago in an online match.

I'm glad you mentioned Internet cafes at the end. I helped operate a local one between 2010-2015 and we had a great community of regulars. $3/hr got you access to a huge library of games on decent hardware connected to fast reliable internet. We didn't have hot food but we did sell frozen stuff and had a public microwave (and a McDonald's across the parking lot in the same strip mall). We also used to have "lock-ins" anyone could pay to be "locked in" overnight and we'd order a bunch of pizza and play games until the sun came up. Basically being a $20 babysitter for 20-30 kids for a whole night. It was fun because everyone would naturally band together and play a 5v5 League game in-house or get the whole room on a single CS:S server. Those days are long gone though because it's far easier to just buy a console and stay home or pay games that don't demand top-tier hardware.

I literally have the biggest gripe with this… and I literally cannot stand the inconsistency. I wanna watch the rest of the video- but right off the bat I wanted to make it clear… If it wasn’t bad enough the PlayStation has X in the South position, Xbox always has it in the West position and *most* Nintendo controllers put X on the North position… MFS *had* to go put X in the East position on the GameCube so that literally every single cardinal has at some stage or another in Gaming hardware history, been the home of *an* X button. So when I hear “press the X button” I’m like, MF Which one? At least if you say “triangle” even if I’m playing on Xbox or Switch, I know that North button is the one you meant cos at no stage has anyone other button in any other position been Triangle. Same as a square. Same as a circle. If you say B, do you mean a SNES B? (South position) N64 B? (West Position) Xbox B? (East Position) Most of these offenders are by Nintendo themselves “innovating” but unable to keep to one specific set layout. They can’t even keep the colours consistent. What colour is the A button? Snes, maybe Purple… Sometimes Red… N64 Blue… Gamecube Green… Why not next let’s just make it yellow… Cover every colour we can… leave nothin to chance. It’s like you’re trying to make us press the wrong button and throw that bloody controller out the window.

Arcades were a third place, but they were rarely their own distinct third place. Instead they were a weird subculture of random places like laundermats, smoke stained convenience stores, bowling alleys and to a lesser degree malls. At least in my experience. But the third place-ness of them was no less prevalent because of this. They functionally gave those random locations their own life and flavor. Like, meet me at the Laundromat, new sf2 just dropped. It was a different time.

My god, man. You're really going to talk about how home consoles started catching up technologically to arcade machines in the mid-Nineties and *not* mention the SEGA Saturn, the console of that generation which hinged like, 80% of its advertising on the fact that you could effectively bring the arcade experience home with how many faithful arcade ports it offered? I mean, for goodness' sake, it had near-arcade-perfect versions of Virtua Fighter 2, SEGA Rally Championship, Virtua Cop, Virtual-On, Dynamite Deka, Outrun and After Burner II and Space Harrier, Gokujou Parodius and Hyper Duel and many other shoot-'em-ups, plus a whole host of Capcom and SNK fighters. To only mention the PSX and N64 given that? For shame.

For people who are of drinking age and in major metros, you can usually find "barcades" or "gamer pubs" in your area which can provide some of that sensation to this day. If you want a blessed reminder of the heyday, look into whatever your area might have for arcade/pin ball expositions. For example, the Bay Area of California has a major one in late July called California Extreme where collectors bring in their arcade and pinball machines and put them all on free play. They include classics, rarities, and some prototypes that never made it to the floors. Go in on the Friday or Saturday night and it feels like a trip back into that heyday, jam packed with folks playing, competing, watching, and cheering each other on. I likley won't be making this year for my own reasons, but I highly recommend it to somebody who wants to either relive those times or get a taste of the beautiful third space that was the video arcade.

"Barcades" seem to basically be the only arcades that are even around where I live aside from the rat casino for children or an actual casino. There are some game shops these days that have some older consoles or even some game tournaments, but any time I've gone to these types of shops was for TTRPGs and they are most popular for that, War Games, or card games. The game shop I go to for a Shadowdark TTRPG campaign in part of does have even modern consoles, like thr PS5 available for people to use, and even an Esports game lounge with like 6 PCs. It might be that our game days are on Sundays but I've rarely seen anyone using the esports lounge. Video gaming seems to really be going the way of online rather than in-person. I do enjoy having my friends over for a LAN these days though. Even though we are all on our own PCs, we are all in the same room talking and playing together.

Ok, it might not be a physical location, but doesn't online gaming community through like streaming and stuff fill the social aspect of a third place. The same conversations that would have been had in the arcade now being said in twitch chat that's where you meet others who share your interests and eventually end up making friends you can play games with online because you choose to interact with people you have a genuine connection to not just people you happen to live in the same town as

As someone who is in to fighting games I find it helps a lot to have friends who play them as well. I also recommend trying multiple different fighting games as they all feel different. If you are concerned about the cost of trying many different fighting games, Games by arcsys frequently go on sale, some as low as 3$. Additionally fightcade gives you access to tons of retro games for free via emulation. I don't know exactly which game/s you have played, but I would be willing to play matches with you or anyone else in the comments.

The lack of third places in society now is the downfall of society atm I feel like. I'm old enough to have gone to arcades as a kid when my dad had the money and took my siblings and I, but they were never a spot I went with friends because they were usually far from where we lived my entire life. Honestly I much prefer the current gaming scene of single player games.

I have fond memories of my dad taking me to the roller rink and letting me play the Simpsons fighting game. He'd also let me roam around the local mall arcade. He didn't have to entertain me, just feed me quarters, lol. I love arcades SO. MUCH. It is a goal of mine to own a cabinet and a pinball machine at some point in my life. (I also loved that one hydraulic kayaking game.) If anyone is looking for a couple of places around the Twin Cities in Minnesota, Can Can Wonderland has some really cool, old arcade cabinets. I'm talking steering a tiny physical helicopter around a circular obstacle course. Then there's a pinball arcade inside of Keg & Case. I asked the barista at Five Watt Coffee if people played early in the morning (it's a shared space) and he said yeah! there are a number of die-hards that come in on a regular basis. I know there are a few more in the area that are on my list but I haven't been to them yet. I was lucky enough to snag a ticket to SGDQ and I'm really looking forward to whatever physical game cabinets they're bringing to the venue. I'm not emotionally invested in any particular speedrun, but I am in love with the community as a whole since they all seem genuinely encouraging of each other. I'm trying to get out into these third spaces because I'm in complete agreement with the point that in-person relationships are different than online ones. I've been missing that in my life since the pandemic. Also, as a tangent, check out your local community arts center. Sometimes they have free or low-cost classes, and they're a great way to meet people and possibly pick up a new skill. Learn art and make games!

My favorite little story about the beginning of arcade games is that they had a hard time convincing businesses to set up Pong arcade machines and when one bar owner finally took the "risk" he reported the machine broken after like 2 days or so. When they came to check what was wrong with it they found out that the coin compartment simply was full to the brim and that's why no one could play anymore. Don't know how much the developers exaggerated that story, but it came up in a documentary about the history of video gaming in general I saw a few years ago.

It's quite funny hearing all the things you described about the arcade experience in the past tense, but knowing that's my experience still every week. Yes, the arcades were dying out, but the amount of arcades is stabilising. If you're in the rhythm game community, there will be people to share a third place somewhere nearby. It's so much fun to share time together at a tournament or meet-ups around these modern cabs. Definitely check Zenius-I-Vanisher to find arcades nearby you :) Going to the arcade regularly improved my (social) life so much, I genuinely wish it on anyone to share such an experience with others. Especially if you're hyped around a certain game, franchise or genre!

So I watched Kill La Kill because in one of Sega's Twitter Takeover events, Shadow the Hedgehog said it was his favorite anime. I'm glad that I did watch it, it's pretty deep if you dig past the surface

First interaction with arcade type was store next to my school that had tekken 3, soul edge, terminator shooter game few more. Also Same time we had locations where you could pay some money to play on pc ( end of 90ies) i played homm3 with a mate on it. Majority of times you saw those arcades in carnival areas or ships that had normal games next to poker machines

There are still a lot of arcades out there if you look hard enough. Even most of the gimmicky ones which are dominated by claw games and watered down mobile games usually have some classic games, and barcades are becoming more and more popular these days. It's definitely a really fun experience to actually go somewhere and play an arcade game on a CRT with the original sights and sounds and with high scores being displayed on each cabinet.
